Carbon & Steel

A project realised in summer 2013, was this collaboration between myself and a woodworker friend Tristan. I had a set of compasses inherited from my dad, who used them in his school days. These compasses I always favoured to the cheap plastic sets handed out at school and they will always remind me of quality tools for the imagination. 

The box they originally came in was a bright plastic box, and I decided they deserved better. So putting my mind to the drawing board and Tristan's skill to work, we created this charming case. 

The wood species is American Ash and the finishing technique is  the Japanese shosugi-ban (good bit of fun with the blowtorch!). The burning meant the wood was sealed without using any lacquers. The internal hinges sustained the seamless minimal design.
The embedding for the pieces to rest in was routed from the solid piece, minimising the waste and need for extra materials.
